7 Easy Ways to Spot Original Tea Leaves
Adulterated tea is real
Open-market tea leaves are often mixed with artificial color, wood dust, low-grade fillers — even re-dried used leaves. Here's how to check yours at home.
The 7 tests
- Cold water test (most reliable) — real tea releases color slowly in cold water; artificial dye bleeds dark color instantly.
- Smell — real tea smells fresh, earthy, floral; fake smells stale or of nothing.
- Rub in your palm — if color transfers to your hand, it's dyed.
- Leaf structure — good tea has fairly uniform granules; dusty, uneven mixes are suspect.
- Liquor color — real black tea brews bright reddish-gold, green tea light golden-green; murky liquor is a bad sign.
- Check the wet leaves — after brewing, real leaves look soft, intact, naturally colored.
- Suspicious pricing — "premium" tea far below market rate is a trap.
